Wellfie Wednesday: Read A New Book!

This week’s Wellfie Wednesday: Read A New Book! is a tough one for me. I have a bookcase at home with a few shelves of books I have purchased, but I have yet to read. The last time I read a book I wanted to read was The DaVinci Code (yes that was 2009). The reason for this is simple. I have been in school for 14 straight years. If I am not reading a text book or some form of research article, I am generally not reading.

I should be done with my dissertation in the near future, and as soon as I am, I will dive into this pile of books. But for now, there are a few key business and health related books I am trying to get through regardless. Ironically enough, two of the books on my must read list were mentioned in Patrick’s Wellfie Wednesday recommendation. The first one is Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth and the second is Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck (who is an educational hero of mine).

Mindfullness

There is a bit of movement in the Physical Therapy world to try to take a step back from treatment of injury and take a 30,000 foot view of an individuals health. A movement for “treating” an individual with health, wellness, and prevention as opposed to treating a disease with medications and surgeries once they happen and it may be too late. (Check out http://www.aphpt.org/ for more details) One of the pieces of big picture health is mindfullness and stress relief. The guys at Recharge are doing great job up in Maryland in their new CrossFit/PT/Mindfullness clinic. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Recharge.

ONE THING I LEARNED TODAY:

Reading can do the mind good. Which in turn is good for the body.  I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed my English background and reading and writing, which is another main reason I started this blog. If none of these blogs helps anybody, at the very least it will be therapeutic to me.
