I Won’t Back Down

I Won’t Back Down

Last week, we lost one of the greats when Tom Petty passed away at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack. I was tempted to write last week’s blog post about Petty as it was happening, but the information was not really clear. To be honest, I felt in my older, wiser, slightly more expert days, it is more important to take time to reflect on events and instances like this and what they mean to you. That is why I delayed this blog until this week.

Tom Petty and I

I am not going to jump on the bus and say I was a huge Tom Petty fan, but the man was timeless and reached each and every generation at each and every level. So many of his songs are easy to relate to, that it is hard not to love the man and his entire catalog. There are your standard bar songs, and crowd pleasing covers, but the man could simply write a song. Fun Fact: Full Moon Fever was one of the first 5 CDs I ever acquired. (I say acquired because my dad had confiscated these 5 CDs from a student who ended up dropping out of High School. Check the “One Thing I Learned Today” section to see the list of all 5.)

At the end of the day, with all of the tough and terrible situations going on in the world today, “I Won’t Back Down” appears to be a bit of an uplifting anthem to rise from Petty’s untimely death.

There are many difficult situations going on in the world today. You personally may be battling a health issue, an injury, an issue at school or work, or a business hurdle, but take a page from the great Tom Petty and DON’T BACK DOWN! Face that issue head on until you figure out how to beat it. For me, I have several issues at present time, but the most relevant is my health. I stand currently at 310 pounds (down from 350 2 years ago) and it has been a roller coaster and a struggle.  But small gains over the months are helping me. I see my doctor on Friday to see if I have done enough healthy eating and exercise over the last year to get off the only medication I am currently taking (a blood pressure medication I no longer want to be on.) Wish me luck!

My first 5 Acquired CDs
1. Tom Petty – Full Moon Fever
2. Aerosmith – Pump
3. De La Soul – 3 Feet High and Rising
4. Young MC – Stone Cold Rhymin’
5. Beastie Boys – License To Ill
